About
the photographer
Michael
first started shooting live music in 1991. A keen surfer and photographer,
he was working for a WA based surfing magazine, and happily combining
his two passions. However, in late 1991, he inadvertently secured a
full time job with Kodak, selling cameras. This severely restricted
him time to take surf photo's, so, using his magazine accreditation
to gain entry, he started shooting live bands. In early 1992, he presented
his portfolio to The West Australian Newspapers Revue Magazine, who
immediately offered him a job.
The
opened the door to a world of well paid rock and roll photography -
he shot live music for six years, shooting most bands that toured the
state, including all the major festivals. When the Revue magazine folded,
Michael continued to shoot live music for a range of magazines, as well
as moving into more commercial and editorial photography.
After
numerous stints overseas, Michael built his web site; www.projectphotography.com the largest website
dedicated to rock and roll photography on the internet. The site also
contains a broad array of commercial photography, including a large
range of primarily black and white photography of his travels in India,
Asia and Europe.
Michaels
rock and roll photography is characterized by his preference for black
and white film, and a very high impact style of shooting live music.
Michael does not yet use digital. Fifteen years of rock and roll photography
has seen him develop a unique and dynamic approach to live using utilizing
elaborate flash techniques, and an ability to get into the thick of
the action.
This
approach has seen numerous injuries to his cameras, and occasionally
himself. It has also led to the Forever and Easy exhibition. Images
on display range from live performance and promotion material to striking
images of mosh pits, and the chaos in the crowd. It serves as a timeless
documentation of a thriving music scene in the most isolated capital
city in the world.
